Preventing metal stains is one of the most important maintenance tasks that swimming pool owners should focus upon. That’s because metal stains are one of the most common problems for pool owners everywhere. In fact, after more than 30 years of experience in the swimming pool industry, I can honestly say that the most common question I have been asked over the years is, "How can I remove metal stains from my pool?” Unfortunately, the short answer to that question is that metal stains can be very hard to remove.

However, there is an easy solution – and that is to PREVENT metal stains from happening in the first place. The best way to prevent metal stains from marring your pool is to use a metal sequestration product on a regular basis. There are many brands of these products readily available. Jack’s Magic and Metal Magic are two of the most popular – however, you can find other brands with the same active ingredients that may be significantly less expensive.

If you are wondering exactly what metal sequestration products are and how they work, here is a brief explanation. These products are commonly based on chemicals such as HEDP (hydroxyethylidene-diphosphonic acid) or phosphonic acid – or derivatives of these acids. They work by binding to the metals in your pool water and preventing them from depositing on the sides or bottom of your pool and forming stains.

Keep in mind that you will need to use a metal sequestration product regularly, because these products break down in the pool water over time and lose their effectiveness. Simply follow the package directions to determine how often you need to add the sequestration product to maintain the correct level.

The most important thing to remember is that you need to use a metal sequestration product on a regular basis BEFORE you notice unsightly metal or mineral stains in your pool. The old saying that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” definitely applies here – so apply a good metal sequestration product to your pool regularly and you can avoid those ugly stains altogether.
