If you have an old fiberglass or gunite (concrete) pool, take a long hard look at the surface. If you see hollow spots, chipping, or cracking, that means the waterproof membrane over the porous concrete pool shell has been compromised. The problem WILL get worse if you don't address it now.

Built in 1961, the Willow Springs pool has held up extremely well over the decades. But no matter how well they are constructed, over the years, concrete pools need swimming pool resurfacing when they show their age.

While the average swimming pool weighs in at over 600 square feet, this one is 3/5 of a mile long, and almost twenty acres! To put that into perspective: it could fit twenty Olympic sized swimming pools.

Many customers ask me what is the best pool filter for their needs. Pool filters come in three varieties: cartridge, sand and diatomaceous earth. The fact is that all of these filters do a decent job of filtering the water - but each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

As an experienced professional who has tested and evaluated water in thousands of swimming pools, I can say without a doubt that DPD tablets are far more accurate than OTO drops for testing chlorine levels.

Maintaining proper alkalinity and pH levels in your pool water is vital, as these are factors that can cause burning of your eyes when swimming. It is also important to understand that alkalinity and pH are not the same thing.

In recent years the use of phosphate removers in swimming pools has been a hot topic and the subject of much debate. The idea behind phosphate removal products is that less phosphates in the water will mean less algae. The question then becomes - do these products really work?

It's a little known fact that fiberglass swimming pools require a higher level of calcium in the water in order to protect the grout around the tiles. Having installed Fibre Tech coating in thousands of pools over the past 30 years, I can't count the number of times that frantic pool owners have called me and said, "You forgot to put the grout around the tiles in my pool!"...

When it comes to purchasing pool water testing kits, it is vitally important that you get a kit that will test for the full range of chemical levels and contaminants. Over the years I have found that far too many pool owners opt for cheap "duo" kits that only test for pH and chlorine. That's simply not good enough!
